Why we are jealous and what we can do about it.

When is the last time you were truly jealous of someone?

Did you act on it?

I don’t think I’ve ever been jealous of a specific person but I have been jealous of their skills.  I have a close friend who has torn down walls, put up drywall, remodeled a bathroom and a kitchen, including the plumbing and electricity and is now tackling some other projects. But then I tell myself, I could do it too.  She learned by reading and doing it. She wasn’t born knowing any of it. But she just told herself she could. Could I learn to tackle some of the same things she has? I like to think so.

I have another close friend who is an amazing baker.  I’m not even close. I envy her flaky crusts. Her pastries are the best I’ve ever had and I’ve been to Paris several times, the epicenter of flaky pastry. Her pastry is even better. Could I learn to make crusts as good as her? Probably. It just doesn’t interest me that much.  I’d rather eat the fruits of her labor than labor myself.

These same friends, though, would both tell you that they envy some of my skills. They would not even think about trying to create and administer a blog. When it comes to decorating, they see me as far more talented and often seek out my advice.

I think one of the reasons I don’t have a huge problem with jealousy is that I figure that given enough time and effort, I can pretty much accomplish what others have. It’s not that I’m that sure of myself but I am tenacious and I figure tenacity is half the battle to learning anything.

Oops, I did think of one thing I do covet. Bloggers who have beautiful blogs with great pictures. They have all the bells and whistles, the great cameras. I keep telling myself I need to buy a really good camera. But then my blog would be about the pictures and that’s not what this blog is all about.

So maybe that’s the thing about jealousy.

As long as we’re pursuing something we ARE passionate about, we don’t have a lot of room for envy. I’m glad my friends are able to do what I can’t.

I love the following statement and it’s so true.

I’ve never let my envy of someone’s skills affect the relationship. I’m too busy pursuing the things I’m interested in to worry about what doesn’t appeal to me that much in the first place.

How about you? Do you find yourself being jealous? If you do, the antidote is to find out what you really love to do and then pursue it.

Oh, I did just think of something. I am very jealous of women who can wear cute shoes. I don’t know if that counts but I really am envious. I can only wear certain shoes anymore because of all the foot surgery. When I see a woman in cute shoes, I just have to bite my lips.

Watch out for the green-eyed monster. It almost always indicates something that is lacking in our lives. And, remember, there are probably other people who are jealous of you! That’s just the way life works.

God bless and have a good day.
