Easy DIY Project: refurbishing a picture with a marker

Good morning, everyone. Here’s a fun DIY I snuck in between marathon writing sessions.

Busy writing but sneaking in a DIY

I’ve been busy writing all week, spending hours at the computer. I’m happy with the rewrites and new covers, but I must say that writing a book about prayer certainly shows where I am lacking and where I need to change some things.

So, I promised myself I would do something creative. I wanted a black-and-white picture for a spare bedroom. Originally, I had every intention of painting one and had the canvas all prepped. Then I remembered this metal picture I was going to take to Goodwill. I thought, why couldn’t I just make it black-and-white? But how?

Deciding which way to go

I knew painting would be fairly difficult and that I would have to be very careful. Since I only wanted to invest a little time in this project, I thought, why not a paint pen or a black Sharpie? I decided on a black acrylic paint pen I had. The first picture shows the marker and the acrylic paint pen. Didn’t use the Sharpie at all.

I simply colored over the gold with the paint pen. Took me about ten minutes. I purposely let some of the gold shine through in spots. The acyclic pen had a matte finish, which I really liked as it contrasted with shiny metallic gold.

I bought this picture at Hobby Lobby for about $5.00 about five years ago during the summer clearance sale. It had to have been at least 75% off, or I wouldn’t have bought it because I’m cheap. If you think outside the box, these clearance items can be repurposed in lots of ways.

I’m very happy with how this turned out.

Speaking of DIY

I wish I could be repurposed so easily. I mean it. Sometimes I wonder if I will ever get life right. How about you? Do you have times you wonder if you’ll ever get it right? Don’t you wish it would be as easy as covering over your mistakes with a paint pen?

But you know who does?

God.

When we bring our shortcomings to him, he takes a marker and covers them over. He doesn’t even see them again or remember them. Seriously. Hebrews 8:12

They are removed as far as the east is from the west. Psalms 103:12.

So the next time you tackle a repurposing project, think of how God is always repurposing us if we ask him.

God bless, and have a good week.
