What do a sweet little bird and God have in common?

A few years ago my friend made me this adorable little wall hanging. I had put it away at Christmas and only just found it a few weeks ago.

Originally, it was painted silver. I sprayed it gold but left some of the silver shine through. By itself, it doesn’t make much of a statement so I considered various ways to hang it.

I had a spare canvas so I spray painted it gray and hung the wall hanging on it.

I think it’s adorable.

But what I especially like is the “message” it sends me. That just like a feather on a bird doesn’t fall to the ground without God knowing about it, so nothing happens in life without God knowing about it.

I’m not one to believe the theology that God “allows” or that “everything that happens to us passes through God’s hands first”. (Yes, I know about Job. Not sure that it supports this “allowing” theology.) That God knows, that God loves, that God showers us with grace, etc, I believe all of that with all my heart.

(I’m just not one to buy into trite and convenient theology that only serves to put the blame somewhere other than on our own shoulders which is where ninety percent of it usually falls. And when we say God “allowed” it, isn’t that what we’re doing?)

What I do find supported in Scripture are all the references to God hiding us under his wings, to God caring for us like He cares for a sparrow. Those make me feel so secure in His love.

So this sweet little wall hanging is a constant reminder to me that I am cared for by a loving God.

Here’s some or those familiar and beloved verses:

Matthew 6:25-27 “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?

Luke 12:24 Look at the ravens. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than any birds!

Matthew 10:31 Fear not, you are of more value than many sparrows.

Luke 12:6-7 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Isaiah 31:5 Like birds hovering overhead, the LORD Almighty will shield Jerusalem; he will shield it and deliver it, he will ‘pass over’ it and will rescue it.

Isaiah 40:29-31 He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

Psalm 91:4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

God bless and have a good day.
