My great cooking experiment and easy recipe

Do you remember I posted that I was determined to become a better cook this year? Maybe you don’t, anyway it’s a “thing” for me this year.

I have always felt like I wasn’t a good cook. Maybe that’s because my family, (not my husband though) have kind of teased me over the years about it. They may not have meant it but I took it seriously. And even if they didn’t, I was always nervous about having people over for dinner because I’ve felt so inadequate in this skill.

It’s kind of strange because I’m pretty confident with a lot of other skills. But this one has been my “Haman”. (I’ll explain that in a future post.)

Because this has been a  l-o-o-o-o-ng winter and an even longer pre-spring, I’ve been “DVRing” a lot of cooking shows. I like Giada, Pioneer Woman, The Kitchen, and Patricia Yearwood’s show. Even if the chefs cook something I’m not the least bit interested in, I watch them and hang on their every word. Even though I don’t generally watch Martha Stewart’s cooking show (just because it’s only on once a week and I forget about it), I did watch it recently and learned a whole new way to cook potatoes, about potatoes in general, (I didn’t know the subject of potatoes was so complex.) and a new way to make scalloped potatoes.

I watched The Kitchen and they featured tw0-ingredient recipes. I’ve had puff pastry frozen in the ‘frig for weeks and was looking for the perfect recipe to get my cooking fingers initiated. When they demonstrated this recipe, I was hooked. Easy peasy.

These are so ridiculously easy I shouldn’t even pat myself on the back, but I am. I was just kind of worried about the puff pastry as I’ve never used them before and everyone said they were tricky to work with. I shouldn’t have listened.

Here’s mine.

First of all, right after baking. As you can see, mine aren’t quite as browned, nor do they have as much cinnamon-sugar in them. But that’s an easy fix. I was very pleased and they were delicious. During the show, one of the hosts suggested that a jam would be good too. I think you could also add some very finely chopped nuts to the cinnamon-sugar.

Look at all those flaky layers.

Can you tell I’m experimenting with photography? I still haven’t found a camera but I have found a number of new phone apps that are really good. I’ve decided that as much as possible I want to use my phone because I can directly download to WP.

What do you think? Am I getting better?
