If someone you know is really hurting

I read a post last night from a young woman who just about broke my heart. But she’s not the only one. I’ve read a number of posts from those who struggle with depression. This particular young woman shared her pain exquisitely. She was a remarkable writer. I responded to her post telling her that. It will never cease to surprise me that the majority of people who suffer depression are usually extremely intelligent and talented people.

From my own experience, I’ve yet to talk with someone who is depressed that isn’t also intelligent, talented, and a really good person.

I just wish I could wrap my arms around them and tell them everything is going to be OK.

But, of course, I can’t because I don’t know if that will turn out OK. I know it can be if they really want to get better, if they seek help and are determined to do whatever it takes to get better.

They don’t know that they are the ones who determine the course of their future. They’re giving the control of their lives over to what people think, their current circumstances, and so many other things. They don’t realize that well-being is up to them.

At the same time, I know what a superhuman effort it takes to conquer depression. I only read these blogs now and then because it’s so discouraging and it brings up some bad memories.

I have always been oversensitive to other’s emotional pain. (Which may account for why I suffered depression for a number of years.)

I’d like to tell them God loves them without conditions and without reservation. But when you’re in that much pain, you’re probably not going to believe it anyway. What they need is someone to walk alongside them and show them God’s love through their actions.

I guess I’m writing this now to encourage anyone who reads this to reach out to someone who is hurting. It isn’t easy. Sometimes helping others hurts us while we try to help them. Sometimes we end up becoming just a “dump site” because they have no intention of working on their issues.

Been there. Done that.

And will probably do it again anyway.

There are a lot of hurting people in this world. I guess I think it’s worth the effort.

God bless and have a good day.
