What’s with all the profane book titles?

I was in Barnes and Noble over the weekend. I decided to peruse the self-help section.

Why are so many self-help books titled with profane words? I guess it’s supposed to be “edgy”.

Nonetheless, I took one and decided to read a few pages. The inner pages were laced profusely with this “descriptive” language. But, of course, I’m not the last word on what a book title should or shouldn’t be. People can title a book however they choose.

BUT…….

that’s not my main gripe anyway.

Let me explain.

All of these books promise quick results. Before you think I’m being unduly hard, I do think these books have a place in the subject of mental health. They provide a jolt to our thinking and a little humor if you like that kind of thing.

I don’t.

At the same time, I don’t suggest reading complicated and long books about depression when you are feeling really bad. That’s definitely for when you are doing better. So a quick little read might be just what you need.

It’s important to remember though that if you’re dealing with clinical depression, there are no quick fixes. If there were, as these books suggest, then no one would be depressed, would they?

You didn’t get depressed overnight (although it might feel like you did), and you can’t get better overnight. It’s hard work. You’ll have to make some changes and as with all changes, it won’t all be easy.

I wish I could say those books were right. I would love to know it’s that easy. But, as I have written many times, depression responds well to simples therapies. Remember though:

But simple doesn’t mean easy.

I don’t use profanity. But in a strange way, I get it. When I have a “sad” day, (not depression though) I search for words to express the angst I feel. Maybe those writers that to succomb to profanity find it helpful. So be it.

For me, depression is profane enough. To use those words would only make it more profane.

But use whatever words you need, if that helps.

God bless and have a good day.
