Solomon doesn’t spend a lot of time explaining why the sinners’ path is wrong. He simply points to where it ends. Their feet run to evil — and here’s the dark irony — they lie in wait for their own blood. They set an ambush for their own lives. The trap they laid for someone else? They’re standing in it. This is one of Scripture’s recurring themes: sin has a way of circling back. The destruction you aim at others has a way of finding you first.

Verse 17 slips in a small but brilliant observation: even a bird has enough sense not to fly into a net it can see being set. The implication is pointed. If a creature with a brain the size of a pea can recognize a visible trap and avoid it, how much more should we — made in the image of God, indwelt by His Spirit — be able to recognize the traps laid for us?

Wisdom isn’t asking us to be superhuman. It’s asking us to pay attention. To look before we walk. To ask where this road goes before our feet are already on it.

The chapter’s first movement ends in verse 19 with a summary principle: greed for unjust gain takes away the life of its possessors. What was promised as abundance becomes poverty. What was offered as life becomes death. This is not God being harsh — it is God being honest. His warnings are not threats; they are guardrails. He describes the end of the road not to frighten us, but to love us enough to tell us the truth before we get there.

Reflect: Looking back, can you see a time when God’s “no” protected you from something you couldn’t fully see at the time?

Pray: Lord, thank You that Your warnings come from love, not from a desire to limit me. Help me to trust that Your guardrails are good — that the path You mark out for me leads somewhere worth going. Give me the wisdom to stay on it. Amen.
