It’s ok to say no

It’s OK to say no and not feel bad about it. That’s easy to write but hard to do sometimes, isn’t it?

Reading today from Matthew  25:7-13. I realize the main message is about Christ’s return and being ready for that wonderful event.

“Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’

“‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.

“Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’

“But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’

While these verses refer to being prepared for Christ’s return, they are also an example of why we have to say ‘no” sometimes. There comes a point when, as much as we’ve tried to help someone, we just say “No”. When people continue to be foolish, we have no choice but to let them suffer the consequences of those poor choices.

It hurts to watch. But it’s still OK to say no.

person holding white chalk that say "no"/saying not is OK

We must tell ourselves no as well. There’s come a point for me to say to myself, “Enough with the excuses.” It’s hard to tell ourselves no as well. Sometimes harder.

It’s hard to watch people go down roads that are going to end in disaster. It pains us as it should. We want to jump in and rescue and shout “Stop”. Our white horse is saddled up and ready. But remember sometimes our rescue may get in the way of what God is trying to do in someone’s life.

Just wanted to share that little tidbit with you today and remind you it’s ok to say “no”.

God bless and I hope you have a good day.

  1. This reminded me of a blog from Holley Gerth, a Christian writer who writes devotions for women, but I read and then pass them on to my wife. Check it out:
