Will America survive this election process?
I proclaim that we WILL!
Will there continue to be friction within the two major parties? Of course.
There always is.
Will some people feel “robbed” this election? Of course.
Some always do.
But will people go back to work, go about their normal routines, live their lives as before?
They always do.
That’s because we are Americans and that means something. We have this freedom to fight and argue because thousands have died to ensure that freedom. But eventually, once we’ve calmed down and realize the world will go on, we always come together.
Besides we have survived some horrific periods in our history.
Look at this list:
- The Civil War
- World War I
- World War II
- Vietnam crisis
- The Cold War
- The Great Depression
- Civil Rights crisis of the sixties
- World Trade Center Attack
- The Great Recession
America has an admirable history of coming together and solidifying as a unit when we are under assault. Should there be another attack on our soil, does anyone doubt that we would join hands and fight together?
We are Americans and that means something big.
We need to look at this election as evidence our exceptionalness. On the day our new president is sworn in, we should be proud. We are one of the few nations in the world that have a peaceful transfer of power. And despite what anyone says, we will again.
Oh, sure, there will be some grumblings. There will be some people who continue to complain. What’s new about that? But that will not destroy us? It never has.
So let’s start looking at this process as evidence about what is good about America and not as a condemnation.
“I’m proud to be an American”, as the song states. Instead of getting upset with political views different from ours, why not say, “Hey, I’m glad we can have different opinions”.
Sure, there are some real issues this election. There are for me as well. But we each have to vote our conscience and to vote with integrity. And even if you choose not to vote for the top position of the ticket, at least vote for everyone else. (I’m a staunch believer in our responsibility to vote but this year is unique and I will criticize no one who makes the choice to only vote the “down” ballot.)
We are bigger than this one election.
So let’s celebrate our freedom to choose. Let’s celebrate the fact that our neighbors can vote differently from us and still be good Americans. Let’s remember our history. Let’s remember who we are.
