I have some great advice today for everyone. Short post alert! Short post alert!
Every once in a while, you come across a piece of advice that just says it all. Sometimes you need a shot in the arm, something that makes you laugh and yet sit up and take notice. Sometimes the best philosophy is the simplest. Sometimes there’s a volume of truth in the fewest amount of words. Now that I’ve set you up for this little gem let me ask you a question. Is there more to this statement than you might think?
Here it is:
Make good choices and wear clean underwear!
It really says a lot, doesn’t it?
Make good choices.
Sadly, they are not all black and white. The Bible lists many black-and-white ones, though.
Don’t lie.
Don’t murder.
Don’t covet your neighbor’s possessions.
But most of us don’t struggle with those. We struggle with the gray. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t been tempted to rob a bank in a long time. Hmmm, never. But have been tempted to rob God?
Sadly, yes.
Times when I’ve wished I could sleep in. But that would mean I might miss my time with God.
Times when I’ve wished I’d been more honest about something.
Gray choices.
Then there are gray choices. Or, if you prefer, grey choices.
They are different for everyone. Some people have no gray when it comes to stealing, stealing is stealing. I’m one of those. Example.
Anytime I am given the wrong change (in my favor), I bring it to the clerk’s attention. I certainly screw up in other areas, though. I am not always good about returning items in a store to where I got them. I have to work on that one. My natural instinct is just to lay the items anywhere and let someone else return them to their rightful place. Having worked retail, I try really hard to put things back, and I always pick up a piece of clothing that has fallen to the floor, whether I caused it or not.
I am gray sometimes when someone asks my opinion, and I’m hesitant to be totally honest. “Do you like my new haircut?” for example. But then most of us struggle with those kinds of questions. What is more important, being honest or being an encourager for someone who may really need it?
We each have to decide these things for ourselves under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Can we be honest? Sometimes there is no right choice. The point is to be aware that everything we do and everything we say comes from a choice we make. That’s hard to accept and even harder to always keep at the forefront of our minds.
So what about the underwear, you ask?
We all know this advice comes from our mothers. But when you think about it, it really sets the stage for the rest of the day, doesn’t it? If we make the right choice about clean underwear, we are more likely to be aware of all the other choices that come our way.
It sets the stage.
