What’s the first step in trusting God?

What is the first step in trusting God?

This is a short post but I wanted to share what is on my heart while it is still so achingly fresh. Know what I mean?

As you probably know, I write often about how our word choice is so important to our mental and emotional health. However, I have also written a whole lot about how important it is to our spiritual health.

I could list hundreds of verses. But you can easily do that as well and if you choose to, it will prove eye-opening.

So, I want to quickly share what’s been going on with me in this regards and hope it helps you as well.

Trusting God means saying the words outloud

My first book has been in hands of editors for longer than usual. What was supposed to take 6-8 weeks took over twelve.

Now you can imagine where my thoughts were headed:

“It must be awful. They are having to take so much time because it’s terribly written. They’re going to tell me to give up.” But remember, I said my thoughts “were” headed in a downward spiral?

They never really got there and here’s why.

Every time I started to panic, I said out loud, “I will trust, I will trust, I will trust.” I didn’t rub my two silvery-red shoes together, however.

  • It wasn’t a wish.
  • It wasn’t a mantra.
  • It was a prayer.

Speaking faith out loud increased my faith

It was a way for me to remind myself that God is to be trusted, that God can be trusted, that God can be trusted the most when I can’t see the path in front of me.

Yesterday, I got back the first line-edit with a cover letter.

“I trust you, God, I trust you, God,” as I held my breath and opened it.

I opened the e-mail cover letter and my throat choked and tears came to my eyes. I couldn’t be reading what I was reading. What I thought would be the typical form-type cover letter (which the last two paragraphs were) turned out to be the heartfelt comments from the person who did the editing. And much more.

I will share later.

But I want you to know, I immediately thought back to the past three months as I waited.

Speaking faith out loud increases your faith

We really can increase our faith by praying faith-filled words out loud.

Of course, some people can make it something rote and that won’t accomplish a thing. Like any tool in our spiritual toolbox, it has to be used appropriately and at the right time. For example, we don’t pray for courage if we don’t need it.

Concluding this short post, the takeaway for you today and the reminder for me is to speak faith out loud so we can learn to trust God more. Let the words come back to you as a resounding “yes!’. Let the words warm your soul like the sun on a beautiful wintry day. Hear the words as though angels are echoing them and know they are true.

“I trust you, God.”

God bless and have a faith-filled day.
